Is Juicing Better For Kenai Kids?

Kenai health trends come and go and I have recently noticed that the practice of juicing fruits and vegetables has made its way back into the Alaska children’s nutrition spotlight.

In my experience, I have found that the only Kenai parents who have been successful at making their own super-healthy juices over the long term are Kenai vegetarians who dedicate a lot of daily time to preparing their food.

Most Kenai people who buy an expensive juicer use it for a few weeks before it is relegated to the back shelf of the pantry. Though juicing provides a way to improve your children’s nutrition, it can be time-consuming and expensive. After buying fresh fruits and vegetables, it can cost several dollars to make one glass. Of course, if you have ever tasted fruit and vegetable juices made fresh, you know how delicious they are. For many Kenai parents, this is worth every minute and every dollar spent.

Does juicing provide more nutrition than eating whole fruits and vegetables?

I haven’t come across any convincing evidence of this but I do see the value for Kenai parents whose kids enjoy drinking juice more than eating whole fruits and vegetable. Mixing vegetables with sweet fruits in a juice can disguise their taste and make them more palatable than the same vegetables raw or cooked.

Kenai parents who would like to start juicing should keep in mind the fact that juicing usually removes all the fiber from the fruits and veggies used. A glass of fresh juice also contains a lot of calories!

Homemade Activities For Kenai Kids

It shouldn’t cost a fortune to get your Kenai kids fun, educational toys. Here at the Kenai Children’s Health Blog we want to provide parents with some ideas to keep their young children’s minds healthy. This homemade activity for toddlers uses an egg carton and encourages development of fine motor skills.

You’ll need:
Empty egg carton
Plastic Easter eggs, in assorted colors
Card stock, or other heavy paper
Markers
Puff balls, in assorted colors

Many of these supplies are probably already in your Kenai area homes. For the rest, they can easily be found at any Nikiski, Sterling, or Kasilof dollar store.

Kenai parents can take the card stock, cut it into cards, and draw an egg shape on each card. Then color each egg in a different color-combination. Have your kids draw a card, and when they see they color combination, they’ll take the plastic eggs from the carton and assemble the same combination from the eggs.

Your Kenai children will have fun while keeping their minds active and healthy as they practice learning their colors and copying color patterns.

Another great activity for Kenai kids is to have them put colored puff balls inside the same color of egg. For safety, make sure the puff balls aren’t a choking hazard.

F-A-R For Sterling Kids With Asthma Attention Sterling parents of children with asthma: Johns Hopkins Children’s Center recommends the FAR approach to prevent flare-ups. FAR stands for Flu shot, Avoid triggers, and Regular use of meds.1

Flu Shot: Respiratory infections are dangerous for Sterling children with asthma. The flu shot lowers the risk of catching a bug and also helps lessen complications for those who do get the flu.
Avoid triggers: Sterling parents of asthmatic kids should determine the triggers and protect their child at their home, Sterling school, and wherever their child spends time.
Regular Medication: The meds referred to are the controller or prevention medications, not the rescue meds designed for use after an attack is in progress.

The Johns Hopkins article also reminds parents to be extra careful when the seasons change–a common time for an increase in attacks.
